Bird Count

As part of our efforts to help track the health of our natural world and involve communities in doing so, HPWA coordinates local activities related to two nationwide bird counts, the:

·         Christmas Bird Count

·         International Migratory Bird Day Count

Both of these counts are done across the country and we gather interested volunteers together to make sure our local area is helping to track long term trends of bird populations.

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is organized by the National Audubon Society and has been occurring since 1900.  Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations - and to help guide conservation action.   CBC occurs on one day between December 14 to January 5 each year.  The Las Vegas count area is a 15 mile diameter circle centering in Las Vegas; it includes the Las Vegas Wildlife Refuge, the lower part of the Gallinas Canyon, parts of Mineral Hill and northeast to the Airport.    Data for the Las Vegas circle goes back to 1943.  Join in on this Christmas tradition, enjoy the outdoors in the winter and learn a few new local birds at the same time.  For more information about CBC go to:  http://birds.audubon.org/christmas-bird-count.

The International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) is organized by Environment for the Americas. IMBD celebrates and brings attention to one of the most important and spectacular events in the Americas - bird migration.  Bird Day is celebrated in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.  Our local celebration involves a citizen based count of birds and occurs throughout San Miguel County on the second Saturday in May.   Participating in the spring time bird count is a fun way to get more familiar with birds that nest in our area and many that just pass through on migration.  For more information about IMBD go to: http://www.birdday.org/birdday.
